February 27 - The Tag Alder - Alnus serrulata

The Tag Alder - Alnus serrulata.  Photo by Robert Priddy

This Tag Alder lives at the Fletcher Community Park in Fletcher, North Carolina.

This tree lives along streams and wet areas at 3,000 feet elevation or less.  The fruit looks like tiny pine cones and they stay on the tree most of the year.  This tree will improve the soil in which it lives because of it's symbiotic relationship with a nitrogen fixing bacteria.
