January 1 - The Sweetgum Tree - Liquiambar styraciflua

The Sweetgum Tree

This sweetgum ball has landed on a burning bush where it is resting on this cold January day.

You can  find the Sweetgum tree at the Asheville Botanical Gardens.

The winter Sweetgum tree can be identified by the presence of the spiked capsules.  These capsules contain many seeds that help the birds have food through the winter months.
