April 19 - Tulip Poplar - Liriodendron tulipifera

Tulip Poplar young leaves by Robert Priddy

The Spring Tulip Poplar

The tulip poplar tree is quite straight and tall. The new spring green leaves are very distinctive. They are straight across at the top. They are 4-6 inches long with 4-6 lobes. The flowers are not out yet. However, they do come out soon in April or May.

I have about 5-6 tulip poplar that share a yard with me. They are beautiful trees. These trees get very tall, over 100 feet. The early colonists in our country, would hollow out the tulip trees to use as canoes.
